On Sunday 20th February 2011 MTV screened a show debating and listing the top 10 UK MCs from 2010. Naturally, as expected, the list caused uproar amongst both fans and artists themselves, describing the list as a farce, and incorrect to say the least.

What was wrong with the list?

The list was flawed in many ways. For example, it isn’t fair to just judge on the past year alone. Just because someone has released more work in the past year, it doesn’t make them or their music better than material that was released during the years before. The list could have instead been based on current relevance, and something which is all too often forgotten – credibility. The other problem was split genres. The list had rappers cramped together with grime MCs. There should have been two lists separating the genres, or more for more genres, and recognition and publicity could have been given to 20 artists instead of 10. But remember, that would risk fuelling the integration of urban music into a wider accepting audience, and we don’t want that.

Not to take anything away from the panel, but who on the panel has a CV that qualified them to judge the hierarchy of artists in the UK today? How many learn-ed scholars of urban music were representing a valid viewpoint? Or was this compilation merely a steered opinion of stone-steppers and industry spearheads? In other words, who kept it real and who kept it sweet? Another thing is the different categories that could be applied to MCs. The most lyrical? The best live performer? The best-selling? However, the list could have been based on the overall package, so in all fairness to categorise even further would be unnecessary.

Why is this alternative list different?

Firstly, as it’s written by one person, it is opinion based on who has been deemed entertaining and maintained attention and produced quality music. It is not the official industry standard others would claim their’s to be. It lists the reasons either for and against why artists were chosen. It goes beyond the Top 10 to list honourable mentions, artists that were left out, and the reasons why, and artists that are in demand. Frankly, it’s not so much a list as it is a celebration. In reality, the UK scene is booming with so much quality out there that making a Top 10 is not an easy job. Enjoy.

10. Lethal B

This one might be controversial but he is so relevant. He’s jumped across a number of genres, and done it extremely well. He’s kept the scene interesting, and managed to bring so many artists together.

9. Big Narstie

Big Narstie has been killing it for a while now. The music is quality, the humour on Twitter is even better. The interviews are interesting and honest, and true. The music is quality. The movement is big. I could go on…

8. Wretch 32

A breath of fresh air in a world of mundane lyrics. When you listen any song a second time, you will pick up on something you missed the first time round. The lyrics are on point. And very clever too.

7. P Money

One of the few artists that actually had what it took to go against one of the powerhouses in Grime. The flow is incredible as well as the lyrics. The only thing missing is more exposure and more official video releases.

6. Sway

Have people forgotten the madness he does on the mic? The flows are too much. Too much. And he put out some mixtapes for all of us. And he’s made it onto a label that supports him abroad. And he can be either serious or silly, and pull it off perfectly on a track.

5. Devlin

I struggled with putting Devs at this position. I thought it should be lower but the fact is he deserves it. I sometimes think that the reason I rate him now is because of what I thought of him when I first heard him. The flows and lyrics were so enjoyable, the beats he chose to rip were just as good. Nowadays, I don’t know if I love the new stuff as much, but the lyrical content is there for me to shut up.

4. Dizzee Rascal

He shouldn’t be on the list. He’s pop. He doesn’t spit those grimy bars anymore. He doesn’t collaborate with the old skool. Okay, the last comment fair enough, but still, it’s Dizzee for goodness sake. Even if it’s not grime, it’s still that Dizzee flow, those catchy Dizzee lyrics. He has maintained the bridge between grime and mainstream to a fair extent. And even if he has done ‘dance’ music, it’s been good dance music. Hats off to him.

3. Giggs

When I first heard Giggs, I didn’t like it. Especially when he got that BET award, I just thought who? Why? Since then I have grown, watched more, heard more, and learnt more. He tears up the club with his live performances. Some may say his lyrics are dumb. I say his lyrics are succint, and so catchy he can have whole crowds spitting verses, let alone choruses. Furthermore, the interviews show him to be a genuine, down to earth guy. Whether some think it’s for the camera or not, it’s entertaining and REAL, something which is not all too common nowadays.

2. Skepta

Is Skeppy better than all those below him in the list? Skeppy is one of the few people in the urban music scene that is killing it nicely. Whether you rate Diddy or not, the guy is on the Forbes list and has affiliated with him. It’s a nice business connection to have. We’ve been given mixtapes, and albums, and decent dance music. The clarity of his lyrics is refreshing. Even Big Narstie said that the only (although I’d say ‘one of’) person doing grime in the mainstream and being successful is Skepta. And for that, props and nuff said.

1. Ghetts

If someone makes the top of a list and it isn’t obvious why, then google him, youtube him, whatever you have to do. In terms of UK MCs, Ghetts is it. Flows? Check. Lyrics? Check. Music? Check. Live performances? Check. Energy? Check. It’s unquestionable fire. Like it or lump it, it’s hardcore in the sense of being true to himself and his art. It’s Ghetts. Get to know.

Demoted from MTV’s List

Tinie Tempah

Over-hyped. I first heard him during the Wifey riddim days. Hood Economics was decent too, the beat was a banger. Most Flukes beats are though. But then? Pass Out was forced down our throat until we had no choice but to like it. But let’s be honest, the first time I heard it I wasn’t impressed. It must have taken hundreds of payolas before I shook a leg to it. I respect his success, but I feel all of the people on my list are better than him in one way or another.

Professor Green

I had to google the names of his songs to remember what they were. From the Jump Off days, he was entertaining, witty, and spontaneous. A gem on the rap battle scene yes. Getting on a track however, proved to be different. Just not my cup of tea. Too pop.

Wiley

I would have put him at 3 or 4 on the list. I so badly wanted to. But I felt offended by the way he handled the beef with Jay Sean’s fans and Twitter idiots. Imagine being a huge fan of someone and then that person turns around and says ‘I don’t care if you’re a fan, screw you anyway’. It’s a big let down. If only he could rectify this the right way and we can all get back to being on the same wavelength. I can’t condone fighting racism with racism. And if you think he was justified in retaliating to horrible comments made against him, then there’s nothing more to tell you. FYI, how many artists actually spoke on the matter, in his defence or otherwise? Not a peep from anyone…PS. I’m not a hater. PPS. I don’t think he’s racist either.

Chipmunk

Things start off so amazing and then change. Not necessarily for better or worse, more sideways. Chip went from the stuff I loved like Who Are You and Fire Alie to Oopsy Daisy and Chip Diddy Chip? No thank you. He talks about keeping the people that like him happy. Does that imply that even if you don’t like the music, you will make music others like you to make? That would be known as selling out. Not in a derogatory way, just in the raw definition of the term – to gain income from providing what others like, not necessarily what you like. He is still fire on the mic, when he’s not constantly talking about haters in interviews. Come spit on some gutter beats for old time’s sake Chip, you know you want to.

D Double E

I could be wrong but nah, not Top 10. I remember D Double E from back in the day, but that’s it, back in the day. The buzz is that Newham Generals tear it up on stage, and Streetfighter Riddim is the only recent tune that comes to mind. He’s popular and fun, but I don’t think you can say he’s better than the MCs on my list.

Lowkey

Lowkey is an incredible talent. I don’t disagree with that for a second. But I don’t think he should be on the list just yet. He needs to build up a presence of more than just the few songs that he has. Some will say that that the reason he should be on the list is because he has managed to gain so much buzz without being promoted, or being in the media too much. I say that in years to come, Lowkey has the potential to be in that league of rappers, such as Immortal Technique, that are so on a next level with their intelligence, they can’t be on any list that could express just how good they really are.

Honourable Mentions

Durrty Goodz

My personal favourite from a long time ago and still today. He could sit alongside Ghetts at the top if I had it my way. But we need more from him, and we need to support him more. I’m talking rubbish, he’s given us a couple of amazing albums, but with a small selection of tracks. I didn’t want to put him too low on the list as I don’t think it would have been a fair reflection. One of the best flows ever heard. Ever. One of the greatest of all time already in my book. Anyone who disagrees doesn’t have a clue. But between him and Narstie, I guess Narstie’s just been more entertaining.

Akala

Another amazing rapper who’s managed to maintain a successful music career underground and overground. Amazing flows once again, but the lyrics are there too. I’d kind of put him in the same basket as Lowkey sort of, if you know what I mean.

Don Strapzy

He’s gonna be on the list soon. Very soon. It’s only a matter of time. Do I also have to mention K Koke on grounds of IC1 stereotyping? Okay then, they’re both incredible, K Koke spits raw too, but I suppose it’s those football bars that get me, and the amount of oomph Strapzy puts into pronouncing each syllable just gives him the edge. For now.

Almost Missing In Action/Most Wanted

Klashnekoff

I bet alot of people could start reciting ‘Murda’ right now if requested. Then there’s All I Got. I will stop at Black Rose. So what if those tunes are old, they’re timeless. I don’t think it would take much for Klashnekoff to make the list, BUT we need more from him, he needs to feed that hunger for his music. A superb talent, one of the greatest to ever carry the rap flag for the UK. But we need more!

Malik

I don’t care what anyone thinks, Malik spits fire. His flows are still reminiscent of when I first heard him on Silent Screams, one of the pioneers of that slow, take-it-in flow. Maybe it’s cos I love Something Real so much. BUT again, there’s just not enough. Maybe I’m not looking in the right places.

Skinnyman

Council Estate of Mind was a modern masterpiece. Someone that paints pictures with his words. An undeniably talented individual. He also had the potential to make the Top 10 list, if he actually did any more but for the amount of time he’s been in the game, we still need more. Then again, what do I know.

Shizzle

People that have loved and supported UK music for years will know Shizzle. I don’t even know why I’m writing like he vanished. He hasn’t. Nevertheless, there’s just not enough of those monster bars ripping up any beat, with lyrical content included. Once again, we need more.

Ears

He did this freestyle recently a while back, and reminded me of why I rated him in the first place. The flows chopped and changed but blended perfectly. You have to look past the glasses and speed ramp haircut and listen to the content. It’s a madness. But, you’ve guessed it, there’s just not enough.

What about?…

Scorcher

He gets ratings from the public. He’s alright in my view, nothing special. I don’t remember many of his songs. That’s the problem. And the reason.

Tempa T

I love Next Hype. I love the remix video with the Viking raver even more. I think he makes good TV with his interviews. But I don’t know much other than Next Hype.

Maxsta

Another person that gets ratings on the scene. He’s had musical beef with Chipmunk, so he fancies himself at that level. Once again, I haven’t heard much of his stuff, and what I have heard doesn’t ring any major bells.

Kano

A fallen soldier. Someone that should be on that list. Someone that shouldn’t have controversial symbolism on their album covers. The same guy that did Ps & Qs. I dunno, he use to murder the mic, he just isn’t doing it for me at the moment.

Pound Sterling

Haters get lost. With his own special way of pronouncing words, and quality big-budget-looking videos, he’s relevant, and interesting, and seems like he lives what he raps. I’m a fan.

K Koke

Like I mentioned above, the guys fire. All that gun talk might not get mainstream airplay, but it will when I’m selector.

Charlie Sloth

Fire In The Booth gets the big barrers coming in and doing what they do best. I reckon if Chip did a Fire In The Booth he’d regain his acclaim. Plus Charlie had a web show which became popular on WSHH. He puts the work in, and therefore gets ratings.

DVS

DVS spits fire. In my opinion anyways. But it’s time for him to seize the moment and do more.

Jaja Soze

Who replied to Grime Bully? Exactly. Certified G. PDC Radio is doing it right now. People need to look past what they consider to be him hating on others and actually give his music a chance.

JME

I respect his success. He sells. He’s Skepta’s bro. He’s talented. Just not hitting the spots for me to put him on the list.

No-Lay

Best female rapper out there. Sorry, did someone mention someone else? Please, you’re having a laugh. No-Lay will give most males a run for their money, and I’m even talking about those mentioned in this article.

Young Spray

I’m a fan. The bars are hard. Controversial as always, but a real rapper. Flows and style are on point.

Conclusion

Okay, so it goes way beyond a Top 10. I’ve listed the artists I rate and who I believe deserve to be rated. I could have mentioned more, like Trim who is another incredible talent, but I’m tired of typing. Damn, I should have mentioned Trim, his flows are nuts too. Anyways, what’s above is a brainstorm in response to MTV’s list. They had a criteria, which sounds great but at the end of the day it boils down to whose banging, who the streets are talking about, and that’s it. I refrained from throwing down the cusses on some artists, and there’s alot more that could be said, but sod it, that’s it for now. At least I have my own list that I’m happy with. Sort of…
