DJ Furious – Best Of Classic Rapid Productions (2009)

Posted by thegreenbutler on January 27, 2009

DJ Furious compiles this mix of both instrumentals and vocals, showcasing the work that Rapid Fire Recordings has put in on the grime scene.

IMO: A little visit was paid yesterday to Furious’ website, to investigate this new addition to the DJ industry. You can’t just trust anyone you know, now that the quality of the art-form is clearly compromised with digital technology. Refreshingly, I was able to listen through his Westwood set more than comfortably. Okay, so I was familiar with the songs in the set, but they blended well. Besides, he’s put everyone’s favourite price tag on this one. See below for the link.

SK Vibemakers – The Best Of 2008 (2009)

Posted by thegreenbutler on January 20, 2009

The London boys define consistency with their round up of what was hot last year in the urban music scene.

IMO: If anyone has been constantly putting out mixtapes of a high quality on the UK urban music scene, it’s these guys. They have released a respectable number of mixtapes with many major UK artists before they even made their name. Although I already have all of these songs (show-off), it’s a good compilation nevertheless, and you’re actually ALLOWED to download them. Plus, you get the skits too. See below for the links.

Logan Sama – The Best There Is At What I Do Series (2008)

Posted by thegreenbutler on November 11, 2008

IMO: So Logan basically has begun this series of mp3 sets demonstrating his access to dubplates. A DJ who is at the forefront of mainstream grime cannot be criticised for releasing free official sets to the masses. No doubt a large chunk of grime listeners tend to ‘keep it real’ and ‘hustle’ their music from rapidshare and the likes of. At least this way, Logan has given those very people the opportunity to do it with a clear conscience. As long as the series is better than that Oneaway Style album, this should be alright. There are 4 episodes so far. See below for the link.

Kano, Ghetto & Skepta – Kiss100 Set w/ Logan Sama (2008)

Posted by thegreenbutler on November 11, 2008

Logan gets the big boys into the studio to quite simply tear the set down. And tear it down they do.

IMO: The thing with big mp3 files, is that alot of the time you will probably only want to hear a bit of the whole track, so finding the part you want can be annoying at times. That is the gripe that stands with them. That being said, this set featuring Kano, Ghetto and Skepta, is exceptional from start to finish, they go to town on some great beats, including ‘UFO Mode’ and ‘Don’t Phone Me’. Skepta is the stand out spitter here, although I’m sure many will beg to differ. Kano is still Kano, welcome back from ‘140 commercial street’, although with shining stars like Ghetto it is clear that he cannot retain the ‘King Of Grime’ title that easily. PS. Do you think Skepta walks off in a sulk because of the other two hogging the mic? Are those last bars meant for Skeppy? Cos that’s what it looks like. See below for the link.

DJ Logan Sama & Durrty Goodz – iGrime Episode 1 (2008)

Posted by thegreenbutler on October 23, 2008

FREE DOWNLOAD!

Some dude called Aza T began this grime podcast series in June. (Episode 2 is currently with 2Pac & Elvis).

IMO: Guess what, this one’s been heard. And that’s because you are finally introduced to one of my ‘Top 3 Selected’ – Durrty Goodz (shouts out to all those that remember him as Doogz, you show-offs). Goodz has been on the scene from the beginning (he is also Crazy Titch’s brother, or step-brother, one of the two), but remains another of grime’s unsung heroes. The clarity of his reggae-influenced flow is second to none, his wordplay is fantastic, in fact it beggars belief why he isn’t more prominent in the industry. The last thing he released was Axiom EP, but this wasn’t enough to satisfy. Not the quality, the amount of songs that is. Doogz gets the ‘All Day Long’ seal of approval, and although this is another of those long mp3’s without tracking, it’s a good example of his skills. Oh part 1, and Logan’s on the decks. Oh part 2, if you can understand the tracklisting for the instrumentals he spits on, then good for you. I can’t. See below for the link.

Marcie Phonix & Hypa Fenn – Shut Up Your Whole Face Vol 1 (2008)

Posted by thegreenbutler on October 23, 2008

FREE DOWNLOAD!

The West London duo share with us this new promotional grime release in conjunction with their September single, ‘Shut Up Your Whole Face’.

IMO: Westside is the reason for this post. Throw your W’s up and all the rest of it. There is talent out there in the wild wild, but very few public representatives. People began claiming North Weezy, thanks to BMD (no hate, just schooling newbies), and now it’s like the Gangs of New York where everyone is repping ‘five points’. If other artists start claiming the other postcodes, we’ll be all over the shop. See below for the link.

P Money – Coins 2 Notes (2008)

Posted by thegreenbutler on October 20, 2008

FREE DOWNLOAD!

If you haven’t heard him yet. take a listen to a January promotional release of P Money, grime’s new rising star.

IMO: Ain’t heard it yet. But I want to, I really really want to. Music should not be categorised as old or new, if it is relevant, then it is timeless. Or at least there’s an excuse for posting a January release in October. If only my blog swagger was tight enough. Anyways, P Money has proved very popular with grime fans, and not without reason. He represents the OG’s, or the Roadside G’z, or whichever moniker they fall under. Interestingly, Little Dee, is also a well known member of this OG’s camp, however he seems to have defected to the Roll Deep clan going by his MySpace page. Update your page P Money! Posted by thegreenbutler on October 17, 2008

FREE DOWNLOAD!

Nottingham Trip/Hip-Hop/Grime crew The Elementz drop a nice mix on Bobby Friction’s BBC Asian Network Show.

IMO: Can someone please explain how some Nottingham DJ’s got Lil Wayne to spit some fresh exclusive lyrics for them? Well, that’s exactly what you’ll hear on this mix. There are some serious beats on this one, there’s even some grime. Guess what, I also found the tracklisting. Bummer note – the mix starts at 02:40, it’s a mini-interview before. See below for the link.

Chipmunk – Guess Who? (2008)

Posted by thegreenbutler on October 14, 2008

FREE DOWNLOAD!

Promotional mixtape released by Chipmunk featuring all the usual urban genres.

IMO: Okay, so a large number of you are reading this thinking you’re way ahead and that this is ‘old’ now. But believe it or not there are people out there who haven’t heard young Chip yet. Being labelled as the new star of grime with music videos on constant rotation, Chipmunk’s verses are strong and visual. He plays well with words, and the mixtape is a good example of his skills. Let’s hope he doesn’t let fame get the better of him, an accusation being made by all his biggest fans no doubt. Special track award goes to ‘Fire Alie’, where he spits over the DnD Remix of Cleptomaniacs’ ‘All I Do’. Maybe it’s because the song brings back memories, but the hook is catchy too, alie.
