Maino – 2009 Predictions

IMO: If you haven’t heard it already, you’re probably as good with timing as I am, although I had this song in 2007. We’re a couple months into the new year, and he’s already done a ‘review’ of the track, but it’s a good tune nevertheless. I think. Oh, it’s about his predictions for the year ahead. Jadakiss – Kiss My Ass (The Champ Is Here Pt.2) (2009)

The self-proclaimed ‘Top 5 Dead or Alive‘ is teams up with that ‘green guy‘ to produce another well put together hip-hop mixtape, preceding his forthcoming album release.

IMO: Okay, so Jada gets alot of underground love on the circuit. Not that I’d take anything away from him, but I don’t think he’s as amazing as he’d like to think. That doesn’t mean I don’t rate him, but Top 5? Come on now, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. That being said, this official mixtape is actually fire, which makes the series more credible as the first one was good too. Question is, is that Jada cough gimmick played out? SK Vibemakers – The Best Of 2008 (2009)

The London boys define consistency with their round up of what was hot last year in the urban music scene.

IMO: If anyone has been constantly putting out mixtapes of a high quality on the UK urban music scene, it’s these guys. They have released a respectable number of mixtapes with many major UK artists before they even made their name. Although I already have all of these songs (show-off), it’s a good compilation nevertheless, and you’re actually ALLOWED to download them. Plus, you get the skits too. See below for the links.

Lil Wayne this, Lil Wayne that, Mr Wayne continues the incredibly popular rap mixtape series with a long awaited follow-up, courtesy of DJ Drama.

IMO: Ain’t heard it yet. And am in no rush to. Too much credit is given to one person in this industry, and it is disproportionate. He’s good, but not as good as everyone makes out. Not yet anyways. Quantity is not always quality, no matter how many cameo verses you’ve done. Regardless, this is the mixtape of the moment, and it’s gonna be plastered everywhere, whether we like it or not. Cory Gunz – The Best Kept Secret (2008)

This young son of Peter Gunz has been doing his thing for a little while now, and is getting some mainstream rap recognition finally.

IMO: Cory, or Corey? Make your mind up. Cory’s father Peter is another celebrity from the rap hall of fame, who used to run alongside Lord Tariq. Cory is clever with the words, and his rhyming skill is definitely worth listening to. There were rumours circulating around his participation in the A Milli beat. He was on an official remix, but was taken off in the final cut. People say it’s because his verse was far more spectacular than Lil Wayne’s, and if you hear it, you may agree. Kano, Ghetto & Skepta – Kiss100 Set w/ Logan Sama (2008)

Logan gets the big boys into the studio to quite simply tear the set down. And tear it down they do.

IMO: The thing with big mp3 files, is that alot of the time you will probably only want to hear a bit of the whole track, so finding the part you want can be annoying at times. That is the gripe that stands with them. That being said, this set featuring Kano, Ghetto and Skepta, is exceptional from start to finish, they go to town on some great beats, including ‘UFO Mode’ and ‘Don’t Phone Me’. Skepta is the stand out spitter here, although I’m sure many will beg to differ. Kano is still Kano, welcome back from ‘140 commercial street’, although with shining stars like Ghetto it is clear that he cannot retain the ‘King Of Grime’ title that easily. PS. Do you think Skepta walks off in a sulk because of the other two hogging the mic? Are those last bars meant for Skeppy? Cos that’s what it looks like. See below for the link.

Wretch 32 – Wretchibition (2008)

Prior to his latest album release, ‘Wretchrospective’, Wretch 32 released this promotional mixtape in conjunction with the SK Vibemakers, showcasing his best verses since 2006.

IMO: Ain’t heard it properly yet. But anything by the SK Vibemakers has my seal of approval. The mixtape contains the whole questions and answers format, but it’s done well. Wretch 32 may not be as household a name as the likes of Wiley, yet, but his range of vocabulary speaks for itself. Although his style took a while (see how natural the rhyming is) to grow on me, I can now only appreciate the flow that lets you understand what he’s on about. See below for the link.
