Maino – 2009 Predictions

IMO: If you haven’t heard it already, you’re probably as good with timing as I am, although I had this song in 2007. We’re a couple months into the new year, and he’s already done a ‘review’ of the track, but it’s a good tune nevertheless. I think. Oh, it’s about his predictions for the year ahead. Elephant Man – Sweep Dem (2009)

Shadyville DJ’s Whoo Kid and Genie team up with the ever consistent Elephant Man on this bubbling mixture of Hip-Hop and Ragga beats. Some you may even recognise.

IMO: With so many fond memories of past gems from the Elephant Man, it’s hard to fault his vocals. This official release is in fact quite moorish, if it can be described like so. At least he hasn’t suffocated it in auto-tune or anything. Looks like a good start to the year for the ragga heavyweight. In fact, I’m listening to ‘Swagga’ right now and testing the suspension on my chair. See below for the links.

Jadakiss – Kiss My Ass (The Champ Is Here Pt.2) (2009)

The self-proclaimed ‘Top 5 Dead or Alive‘ is teams up with that ‘green guy‘ to produce another well put together hip-hop mixtape, preceding his forthcoming album release.

IMO: Okay, so Jada gets alot of underground love on the circuit. Not that I’d take anything away from him, but I don’t think he’s as amazing as he’d like to think. That doesn’t mean I don’t rate him, but Top 5? Come on now, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. That being said, this official mixtape is actually fire, which makes the series more credible as the first one was good too. Question is, is that Jada cough gimmick played out? Lil Wayne this, Lil Wayne that, Mr Wayne continues the incredibly popular rap mixtape series with a long awaited follow-up, courtesy of DJ Drama.

IMO: Ain’t heard it yet. And am in no rush to. Too much credit is given to one person in this industry, and it is disproportionate. He’s good, but not as good as everyone makes out. Not yet anyways. Quantity is not always quality, no matter how many cameo verses you’ve done. Regardless, this is the mixtape of the moment, and it’s gonna be plastered everywhere, whether we like it or not. Logan Sama – The Best There Is At What I Do Series (2008)

IMO: So Logan basically has begun this series of mp3 sets demonstrating his access to dubplates. A DJ who is at the forefront of mainstream grime cannot be criticised for releasing free official sets to the masses. No doubt a large chunk of grime listeners tend to ‘keep it real’ and ‘hustle’ their music from rapidshare and the likes of. At least this way, Logan has given those very people the opportunity to do it with a clear conscience. As long as the series is better than that Oneaway Style album, this should be alright. Ace Hood – All Bets On Ace (2008)

The new name recently making waves in the hip-hop indsutry gives us a rap freebie that showcases his style for those who haven’t heard him yet.

IMO: Will Ace ever be able to shrug off the comparisons to Lil Wayne because of his barnet? It doesn’t matter, because this post is based solely on his performance on the BET Cypher. Ace Hood spat fire flows on that clip (which is in the blog somewhere), and this is an official offering from him before his upcoming album release ‘Gutta’, which should be out in the next week. He is also on DJ Khaled’s roster, who hosts this mixtape, so no doubt you’ll hear Khaled soundbites, and Khaled sentences without verbs. See below for the link.

Kano, Ghetto & Skepta – Kiss100 Set w/ Logan Sama (2008)

Logan gets the big boys into the studio to quite simply tear the set down. And tear it down they do.

IMO: The thing with big mp3 files, is that alot of the time you will probably only want to hear a bit of the whole track, so finding the part you want can be annoying at times. That is the gripe that stands with them. That being said, this set featuring Kano, Ghetto and Skepta, is exceptional from start to finish, they go to town on some great beats, including ‘UFO Mode’ and ‘Don’t Phone Me’. Skepta is the stand out spitter here, although I’m sure many will beg to differ. Kano is still Kano, welcome back from ‘140 commercial street’, although with shining stars like Ghetto it is clear that he cannot retain the ‘King Of Grime’ title that easily. PS. Do you think Skepta walks off in a sulk because of the other two hogging the mic? Are those last bars meant for Skeppy? Cos that’s what it looks like. See below for the link.
