A fast-becoming-famous UK rapper from East London released this unique gem last year, with a flurry of freestyles over own-produced beats and those well know. The mixtape is hosted by the amusing Kat Man, whom some of you may recognise from MTV and other channels.
IMO: Out of the depths of East London emergesShizzio, someone whose hustle I truly respect. You may or may not have heard of him, so a quick run down goes: his biggest release to date is ‘Arabian Dance’ which was screened on all the major music channels, he recently went to the top of the charts in Miami and Venezuela with his refix of that Strokes tune called ‘Put Up Your Breitling’, and his new single is with US singer TQ. Oh, and he made it to the top 50 bachelors of 2008 in Asiana Mag too. All this, before he’s blown up. This was his first mixtape after his debut EP. DJ Hevehitta, DJ Unexpected & MKW team up with none other than 50 to produce a ‘Motion Picture’ mixtape, a novel way of saying they’ve arranged his songs in a unique order.
IMO: The PSA on this post is that I have shared this album in an attempt to maintain the discipline of the format I have attributed to myself for this blog. Basically (to be said in a Dudley accent), although I haven’t heard this mixtape yet, I’m in no rush to listen to it either. As for many of you also, alot of the tracks on here have been heard before, if not all of them. The concept for this mixtape was to demonstrate a musical autobiography of Fif’s life to date. Well, at least the album art is nice. And credit is due for the concept. See below for the links.

IMO: With so many fond memories of past gems from the Elephant Man, it’s hard to fault his vocals. This official release is in fact quite moorish, if it can be described like so. At least he hasn’t suffocated it in auto-tune or anything. Looks like a good start to the year for the ragga heavyweight. In fact, I’m listening to ‘Swagga’ right now and testing the suspension on my chair. See below for the links.
IMO: Okay, so Jada gets alot of underground love on the circuit. Not that I’d take anything away from him, but I don’t think he’s as amazing as he’d like to think. That doesn’t mean I don’t rate him, but Top 5? Come on now, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. That being said, this official mixtape is actually fire, which makes the series more credible as the first one was good too. Question is, is that Jada cough gimmick played out? Not to be confused with Bobby Friction from BBC Radio, this one from Def Jam UK puts out his debut single with a wonderful hip-hop instrumental graced by a few well known names.
IMO: When I first saw the pics, I thought, what the hell has happened to Bobby?!? It took a while to realise these are in fact different people. No, really, they are. Regardless, shouts to the ‘Bobby‘ one as we have a mutual friend.DJ Fricktion, aka Dope Enemy, does have the right idea though in releasing this one for free – better to be heard than to remain on the shelf and not be heard at all. One more thing, the only thing I know about Mams Taylor is that he straight sparked Jesse Metcalfe for trying it. See below for the link.
DJ Furious compiles this mix of both instrumentals and vocals, showcasing the work that Rapid Fire Recordings has put in on the grime scene.
IMO: A little visit was paid yesterday to Furious’ website, to investigate this new addition to the DJ industry. You can’t just trust anyone you know, now that the quality of the art-form is clearly compromised with digital technology. Refreshingly, I was able to listen through his Westwood set more than comfortably. Okay, so I was familiar with the songs in the set, but they blended well. Besides, he’s put everyone’s favourite price tag on this one. See below for the link.
IMO: Judging from the title, you can guess how the chorus will go. It’s a bashment/dance funky house refix of the popular nursery rhyme. A little known secret is that there is a dance that goes with this, and it involves touching your head, then your shoulders, then your knees, and then your toes – ingenius. The possibilities for variations are endless. I don’t know much about the crew that did this remix, but hats off to them, they pulled it off nicely. DJ’s can spin this comfortably with self-respect. Either way, it’s far more superior than ’shoulder leans’ and ’supermen’. See below for the link.
The G-unit deputy just doesn’t seem to get tired. The PLK returns with another official hip-hop mixtape freebie to maintain the allegiance of the G-Unit faithful.
IMO: Nothing’s changed with thegreenbutler yet. Opinions are still being given on artists and music that ain’t heard yet. However, there is some sort of methodology/excuse behind this. Most people are more than capable of knowing what they like to listen to. Who are we to dictate what sounds good and what doesn’t? Okay, that didn’t work. Lloyd runs with Fiddy, someone who is still able to sell major units despite the fact that the music selling industry is on it’s way out. There, that should be good enough. See below for the link.
Lil Wayne this, Lil Wayne that, Mr Wayne continues the incredibly popular rap mixtape series with a long awaited follow-up, courtesy of DJ Drama.
IMO: Ain’t heard it yet. And am in no rush to. Too much credit is given to one person in this industry, and it is disproportionate. He’s good, but not as good as everyone makes out. Not yet anyways. Quantity is not always quality, no matter how many cameo verses you’ve done. Regardless, this is the mixtape of the moment, and it’s gonna be plastered everywhere, whether we like it or not.
